In light of the recent social unrest, with the ongoing racism, violence and protests across the UK, the National i-THRIVE Programme are calling for a national effort to support children, young people and families during this traumatic time. We are requesting any resources you may have that we can share with our network across the country.
To give some examples, below are resources that might be helpful:
– Sky News’ For Your Information show – a short video with advice for young children who may be afraid after the recent stabbings in Southport, by Laverne Antrobus at The Tavistock & Portman NHS Trust.
– The NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children) resource: Talking to children about racism
– Save the children: Talking about distressing current events with kids
– How to speak to children about trauma and tragedy – guidance issued by the British Psychological Society
– UK Trauma council toolkit on childhood trauma, migration and asylum
– Staying Safe amidst Far Right violence
Other resources available on the NCL Waiting Room
There are also some national resources on NCL Waiting Room, the leading
resource hub for mental health and wellbeing support in North Central London.
The team have created a designated page ‘Coping during Community Unrest’ where you can access resources around each of the subheadings below:
Examples of resources include:
– Coping Strategies for Anxious Times
– Building Resilience Leaflet
– Doing What Matters in Times of Stress
– Beacon House Trauma Resources – free resources to support people who have experienced trauma and adversity
– Hope for the Young – national charity offering mentoring and advocacy for young refugees and asylum seekers
Colleagues in Greater Manchester have also shared some resources
Trauma guides for children and young people and parents were created in the wake of the Manchester Arena attack and are part of the information sent out by the UK trauma council. They can also be used by those supporting young people as they actively monitor or whilst they are waiting for trauma input.
A self-help resource: A guide to Managing Anxiety through Uncertain Times
A short animation about coping with traumatic incidents bt Greater Manchester Resilience Hub
A psychoeducation video designed for practitioners and school staff around understanding and supporting young people with trauma – made by a group of young people impacted by the Manchester Arena attack
A padlet has been created with a list of collated resources here.
