National i-THRIVE Programme training offer: From theory to implementation
Are you interested in using Quality Improvement (QI) methodology to support your local implementation of the THRIVE Framework?
The National i-THRIVE Programme have developed a training package which can be bought in to support you with this, providing:
- i-THRIVE Quality Improvement workshop: overview of QI methodology aligned to the THRIVE Framework for system change. This will include access to tools and resources to support implementation through QI projects. Two hour workshop for a maximum of 30 strategic leads and team representatives.
- Upon completing this workshop participants will have the tools to start and progress their own Quality Improvement projects, with ongoing support provided by a QI forum.
- i-THRIVE QI Forum: three local monthly forums to support local implementation of QI initiatives.

Online training courses
The Institute for Healthcare Improvement Open School have online courses in QI.
Future Learn Quality Improvement in Healthcare is a free, online course in Quality Improvement in Healthcare.
- The National i-THRIVE Programme team undertook a quality improvement project focussing on improving the experience of remote delivery in light of the new ways of working in response to the pandemic. The summary details the approach taken, our findings, and top tips and considerations for remote working, which was presented at our National i-THRIVE Community of Practice Webinar: Digital Innovations through COVID-19.
- The King’s Fund was commissioned by Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust to work with their Quality Board to facilitate an assessment of its existing approaches to quality improvement and to develop a strategy for future work. The case study details the approach and philosophy behind this work, which involved working with the trust’s five directorates to develop their ability to appraise their own approach to quality improvement with a view to improving performance, achieving better clinical outcomes and building further on the trust’s capacity as a learning organisation.
Introductions to QI
Quality Improvement Made Simple by The Health Foundation provides a good introduction to Quality Improvement for people completely new to QI and for those who would like a refresh of the key points.
The West of England Academic Health Science Network has drawn together a range of resources to support staff and organisations working to make improvements in health care quality. They provide an overview of quality improvement and a useful framework to use when undertaking projects.
Quality Improvement in Mental Health by The King’s Fund describes the quality improvement journey of three mental health organisations. It provides key insights and lessons for others considering embarking on a similar journey.
Dr Mike Evans: An Illustrated Look at Quality Improvement in Health Care by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement is a video introduction to the use of Quality Improvement in health care.
The NHS Improvement hub has many tools and resources helpful for setting up QI projects across health sectors.
WEAHSN Academy have a number of methods and tools summarised for selective use at various stages of improvement as well as further, more detailed, resources listed for each.
MINDSet is a quality improvement toolkit for people involved in providing and commissioning services for people with mental health problems. It has been designed with the involvement of a range of organisations with the aim of making continuous improvement in mental health easier. The toolkit provides a range of improvement tools and handy summaries of national policy and guidance. Examples of how mental health services have used the tools and the results and learning the teams have achieved are detailed.
Healthcare Improvement Scotland produce a range of resources designed to support healthcare improvement.
The Handbook of Quality and Service Improvement Tools by the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement brings together into a single resource 75 proven tools, theories and techniques for quality and service improvement. Included is a suggested framework to systematically progress through a quality and service improvement project and quality and service improvement tools.
East London NHS Foundation Trust has an online repository of information on the application of quality improvement in mental health.
Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP) is an independent organisation that aims to improve outcomes by enabling those who commission, deliver and receive healthcare to measure and improve our healthcare services. HQIP has a great database of resources including reports, guidance, case studies and more.
‘The Improvement Guide: A Practical Approach to Enhancing Organisational Performance’ by the Institute of Healthcare Improvement Open School provides information about the Model for Improvement, a simple yet powerful tool for accelerating improvement. The model is an integrated approach to process improvement that delivers quick and substantial results in quality and productivity in diverse settings. A practical tool kit of ideas and examples from different industries, including mental health care and international improvement efforts are shared.
Engaging Your Team in QI
The King’s Fund co-authored a report with the Health Foundation called Making the case for quality improvement: lessons for NHS boards and leaders. This report outlines 10 lessons for NHS leaders and provides a starting point for leaders seeking to embed quality improvement in their work.
The Institute for Healthcare Improvement wrote a blog discussing ‘Is there a way to prevent quality improvement burnout?’. Strategies for increasing the likelihood of sustainably adopting improvement are covered.
